GEOG/SPIA 2244: Sustainable Urbanization
GEOG/SPIA 2244: Sustainable Urbanization considers the process of urbanization and theories of approaches of urban development using a comparative approach and global perspective. In this course, students will debate the meanings of sustainable urbanization and development in cities and how they are measured. In addition, they will evaluate urban sustainability initiatives in the context of urban political economies, land-use practices, urban inequality and diversity, urban nature, and urban policy and politics. Programs and policies designed to enhance sustainable urbanization will also be discussed.
Why take it?
This course will encourage students to engage in imagining how urban development can be more environmentally sustainable, socially just, and economically inclusive. Students will consider the challenges and opportunities of sustainable urbanization across geographic and cultural contexts, developing skills that will allow them to integrate knowledge across disciplines and communicate through multiple mediums.
