SPIA/HNFE 2314: Active Transportation For a Healthy, Sustainable Planet

This course explores the connections among active transportation (e.g., bicycling, walking) and significant global challenges such as physical inactivity, health, the environment, and the economy, on local to global scales. Students will discuss methods to assess walkability among communities with different worldviews, and will examine the influence of the built environment on the rates of active transportation. Students will also explore approaches to evaluate demographic and psychosocial predictors and physical and policy barriers to the use of active transportation, and explore successful strategies to increase active transportation through community design guidelines, behavior change tools, transportation planning, and policy.

Why take it?

This course offers students the opportunity to work with students and faculty from a variety of disciplines on a topic that impacts many fields. Students will have the opportunity to think critically about a singular topic from a variety of disciplinary approaches, which is a skill critical for success in the workforce.

SPIA/HNFE 2314 fulfills an elective in the Ecological Cities Pathways minor.
